Configuration
Thanks to the administration module and other open-source softwares (client-side), CMDBuild is completely customizable: data model, processes, reports and data synchronization.

Installation
CMDBuild comes with a user-friendly wizard that helps you to setup and install the application.
CMDBuild requires PostgreSQL, Jakarta Tomcat and Java JDK; Alfresco, Liferay and GeoServer are optional.The wizard installs and configures:
- Shark (workflow engine)
- Jasperreports (report engine)
- Quartz (scheduler)
- ExtJS (GUI Ajax)
- OpenLayers (georeference)
- Prefuse (relations navigation)

CMDB modeling
The data model is completely customizable and it's generated within the database (PostgreSQL) using the web interface; the data model is based on a custom ER schema that might also include informations about groups permissions.
Custom modeling includes:- entities list (classes or tables)
- entities hierarchy (superclass definition)
- relations between classes (domains)
- attributes list for each class; primitive attributes (boolean, integer, decimal, string, date, time, IP address, ecc), values lists (lookup) or foreign keys (reference)

Workflow modeling
User-defined workflows:
- complete workflow design
- user groups interaction
- single step definition (interaction form)
- automatic system operations (send email, CMDB operations, etc)
Technical details:- XDPL format (WFMC standard)
- Enhydra Shark engine
- JPEd and Enhydra Together as workflow design software
- import into CMDBuild using administration module

Report configuration
CMDBuild allows you to define custom reports to access and print stored data:
- text fields format
- grouping

Automatic Inventory
Thanks to an ETL solution you can link to CMDBuild "Automatic Inventory" systems (like OCS Inventory) that tracks and updates all the information about hardware and software changes on client nodes (serialnumber, RAM, HD, CPU, SO, etc).
Technical details:
- configuration descriptor for mapping data (XSLT / XPATH)
- synchronization process scheduling
- JDBC connection to relational DB and changes detection
- workflow activation (notification / approval)
- CMDB data update

Data synchronization
With the same synchronization tool described in the previous slide (based on access to external data sources) you can also integrate:
- monitoring systems (including Hyperic HQ)
- "directory" systems for personnel data update (including Active Directory)
- other ERP / CRM systems to update users' data, customers' data, suppliers' data, etc.

Use
You can access CMDBuild with a standard web browser thanks to the native AJAX interface; also available a portlet for portal systems and a web service SOAP for external interaction.

Web interface
Thanks to the powerful AJAX web interface users are able to:
- manage cards (insert, edit, delete, search, create relations, card history, run default reports, upload attachments, georeference)
- run workflow processes
- run custom reports
- perform utility functions (password management, massive data editing, CSV import/export)

Relations graph
In CMDBuild it's possible to define 1-N or N-N relations (aka "domains") between cards:
- items with items (functional relationships, hierarchical, etc.)
- logical and physical components
- items with locations, suppliers, contracts
- items and locations with VLAN, wirings and network points
- item, users and operators with ticketing processes, change processes, etc

Workflow execution
The workflow system provides major advantages:
- ensures standard and uniform operators behavior
- ensures the proper update of the CMDB
- helps to control ongoing operations
- tracks the activities performed, allowing you to get high-quality statistics (SLA etc.)
CMDBuild also provides an important and qualified support to organizations wishing to adopt ITIL best practices.

Portlet
Some data operations may need to be performed by non-technical staff that might not have access to the CMDBuild user interface.
In this case other tools can be used, for example standard "portlets" or custom web forms.
CMDBuild offers a standard JSR168 portlet that can be installed on intranet portals (ie Liferay); the portlet allows data modification and workflow execution.
Alternatively, you can publish and manage all the CMDBuild data accessing the SOAP webservice that comes with the application.

Documents management
You can associate each card with one or more technical and operational documents (manuals, contracts, forms, images files, etc.), even grouping them into categories.
CMDBuild stores documents in the Alfresco DMS system, which is used as an embedded repository.

Geo-referenced items
During management operations it can be useful to know the location of items (georeferenced) and query with graphical forms this specific information.
CMDBuild handles local representations (plans) and maps (GIS).
In the first case you can manage, for instance, details of individual rooms and the placement of assets within them.
In the second case you can display such assets: assets might be located in different company locations, locations of suppliers, etc..
Several maps services are available and maps' background can be customized with background drawings, both vector and raster.
