CMDBuild Newsletter n. 34

November  2012

CMDBuild is a configurable web application to model and manage a database containing assets (CMDB stands for "Configuration and Management Data Base") and handle related workflow operations.

CMDBuild is promoted by the Municipality of Udine and developed by Tecnoteca srl.

This email was sent to you because you were interested in CMDBuild support or product info. If you would like to unsubscribe, please follow the instructions below.

Work in progress

During these months the main development activities have been dedicated to the implementation of "views".

As already mentioned in the previous issues of the newsletter, multiple methods for the definition of a “view” will be made available:

  • by saving the result of a search filter
  • by specifying restriction criteria in rows and columns during the definition phase of permissions for each user group
  • by writing custom SQL query

The new function will also make it possible to activate much more granular access and modification permissions on the information stored in the CMDB, allowing - for example - to divide up the management of the assets by location or by customer or by other selection criteria.

Parallel to this, new features for the geo-referencing of objects on plans have also been developed, as described in the following paragraph. The development of the BIM project (Building Information Modeling) is being pursued: we will come back to that in the coming months.

GIS extensions

New GIS features that allow you to locate interest objects on the plans of the building have been implemented, and will be released in the coming days in the intermediate version 2.03.

In particular, it is now possible:

  • to define a customized GIS navigation tree through the Administration Module, determining a hierarchy of interest (eg Building / Floor / Room / Asset) within the various typologies of relationships found in the data model
  • to use the so-defined GIS navigation tree in the Management Module, exploring the various hierarchical levels, selecting the elements, activating or turning off their display, examining their location on the map
  • to operate on a selective basis on the different floors of a building (operation that was not possible until now), showing the elements contained in each of them

The new GIS features are added to the pre-existent ones, making the use of CMDBuild even more effective in the most diverse fields, from the inventory and handling of assets to the management and maintenance of buildings and industrial structures.

CMDBuild in action

The Regional Council of Tuscany, a long-time CMDBuild user, has been the first institution to activate the new above-mentioned GIS features, to whose development it has also considerably contributed.

In order to meet the internal needs of control of the space allocation and assets placement, the Regional Council of Tuscany, with the support of Tecnoteca, has carried out the following activities:

  • conversion and uploading of the plans of 7 buildings, 37 floors, 1115 rooms (with surfaces and heights)
  • geo-reference and consequent positioning of 437 people, 2131 IT assets and 8503 non-IT assets (furniture and miscellaneous equipment) in the plans
  • configuration of reports and dashboards with the purpose of analyzing the uploaded data
The system will be kept in sync with the current application of administrative management of the assets by setting up a special connector.

"The Open Group Architecture Framework" (TOGAF) is a framework to support design, planning, implementation and management of “enterprise” computer architecture, organized in the four levels of business, applications, data and technology. TOGAF is an adaptable, open, technology-neutral framework, and it is complementary with other best practices such as ITIL, which is now being extensively used for the management of the most complex systems.

Archimate is a language for modeling enterprise computer architectures fully compatible with TOGAF, while Archi is an open source tool for the design of Archimate models.

Having said that, and considering the interest for these topics already shown by the users of CMDBuild (see forum and its contribution), we would like to report an initiative jointly delivered by developers from the University of Bologna and SIAE (Italian Society of Authors and Publishers).

As pointed out both in the forum of CMDBuild and in the forum of Archi, a synchronization plugin between CMDBuild and Archi is now at an advanced state of development. This plugin will be soon released by the University of Bologna and SIAE, with open license as CMDBuild plugin.

CMDBuild on CONSIP for the Public Administration

The new Stability Law strengthens the obligation for the Public Administration to restock through Consip conventions and MEPA electronic market.

We would like to remind the Italian PA that Tecnoteca has been enabled more than two years ago to deliver on the Electronic Market their support services related to the open source CMDBuild application, of which it is developer and maintainer.

In particular, configuration services of CMDBuild data model (two levels of complexity), workflow configuration (three levels of complexity), support days packets (5 or 10 days), annual maintenance (two levels of complexity) are available in the MEPA catalogue.

Several orders have altready been received on the MEPA channel; we would like to encourage all the PAs to take this solution in consideration for service orders related to the management of the CMDBuild system.
