CMDBuild is a configurable web application to model and manage a database containing assets (CMDB stands for "Configuration and Management Data Base") and handle related workflow operations.

CMDBuild is promoted by the Municipality of Udine and developed by Tecnoteca.

CMDBuild Day 2012

On Thursday May 10th CMDBuild Day 2012 the second convention of the CMDBuild users was held at the headquarters of Regione Emilia Romagna.

The meeting was attended by more than 120 people coming from all over the Italian peninsula.

The event started with the welcoming greetings of Regione Emilia Romagna, the Municipality of Bologna and Unindustria Bologna.

Then Tecnoteca, mantainer of CMDBuild, came in, summing up the main features of the program, its evolution up to the present day and telling the next developments in advance; Municipality of Udine remembered the reasons and the modalities with which it has contributed to the birth of the CMDBuild project, and finally Yacme Bologna as local partner of the project.

The event went on with the presentation of different and interesting case studies of public administration offices and private companies, all CMDBuild users: Regione Emilia Romagna, Avvocatura Generale dello Stato, CSI Piemonte, Piaggio Spa, Camera dei Deputati (attending by means of videoconference connection from Rome), Consiglio Regionale della Toscana, AGSM Verona, Aeroporto di Bologna, Provincia di Bologna, Provincia di Reggio Emilia, Comune di Udine, Eurogroup Torino, Università di Bologna, Interaction Group Roma.

The discussion was focused in particular on CMDB modeling criteria, on the way a great deal of ITIL and not-ITIL processes have been analyzed and implemented into the system, on the monitoring (oe of the most heated points), on the usage of CMDBuild for the automation of environments that differ from standard ones (IT).

During the last speech, held by Tecnoteca, the quality criteria, upon which the development (tests) and integration and release procedures (tools and specific configurations) are based, have been discussed.
These procedures have been adopted for the technical management of the project, on behalf of the value of the final product.

The meeting went on until 6pm with a good response from the audience, proving a real interest for the suggested topics.

Slides and videos of the CMDBuild Day available now

Slides and videos have been published on the official website.

We'd like to thank Regione Emilia Romagna for the support: thanks to their staff we've managed to get and publish hi-quality video streams of the meeting.

Moreover we'd like to point out that, thanks to Regione Emilia Romagna, the whole meeting has been broadcasted in streaming on the website www.cmdbuilday.it (we also created a specific Twitter hashtag: #cmdbuilday).

The CMDBuild Day awaits you in spring 2014!

Updates on project roadmap

CMDBuild Day turned out to be a chance for presenting the updated roadmap of the project.

We are now close to the release, by July 2012, of the 2.0 version, which includes the already announced extensions concerning the new Dashboard and the refactoring of the workflow system (together with XPDL 2.0 and the Together Workflow Server 4.4).

Right after the 2.0, we will be working on the 2.1 and 2.2 releases at the same time, that will keep us busy for the second part of the year.

Version 2.1 will be developed with the contribution of INSIEL and will feature:
  • management of new parameters for the configuration of a simplified version of the CMDBuild user interface (offered as an alternative to external portlets)
  • definition and visualization on CMDBuild of metadata to be filed in Alfresco

Version 2.2, that should be availble towards the end of 2012, will include the longed-for feature for the the definition and management of views, both on single tables (useful for handling permissions on rows and columns) and multiple tables. This feature will be developed with the partial contribution of Regione Emilia Romagna.

Finally, the first four-month period of 2013 will see the development, helped by the partial economic contribution of Regione Emilia Romagna, of a new comunication "layer" for the management of asyncronous messages between the server and the connected browsers.

This new implementation will improve different management features, amongwhich the card locking and the automatic update of cache informations.

Monitoring tools and CMDBuild

One of the "hot topics" of the meeting has been, without doubt, the monitoring tools.

They were mentioned by several speakers and used as main topic by AGSM Verona and University of Bologna.

AGSM Verona uses GroundWork (based on Nagios) as monitoring system and the problem they solved with CMDBuild was intercepting mail alerts, analyzing them, querying CMDBuild about the services / customers and interested suppliers / maintainers, producing a report with a summary of these pieces of information and forwarding the original email together with the report.

On the other hand the University of Bologna has presented a prototype, which has got spread attention, designed to produce NetEye configuration files (as well as Nagios config files) starting from CMDBuild data.

The system was implemented as a Java application that interrogates CMDBuild, converts the pieces of information into a graph and produces the configuration files required by NetEye, with all the information regarding hosts, resources / services to be controlled and dependencies to be considered to prevent redundant notifications.

For more detailed information please refer to the slides and videos of the two speeches.

CMDBuild case history

Eurogroup is a brand created in 1999 (by FinPiemonte, the Financial Institution of Regione Piemonte) to group Eurofidi, Eurocons and Euroenergy activities together.

The group, with 50,000 Italian PMI and an associated network of 32 branches in eleven Italian regions, provides services to access credit, financing, quality systems, energy solutions, management consulting, and strategic direction.

The IT department has recently decided to adopt ITIL to handle its business, starting a project with the support of Cogitek , for the analysis of processes, and with Tecnoteca , for their implementation within CMDBuild.

The first phase of these activities ended with the implementation of "change management" and "Validation & Testing Management" workflows.

One of the main aims of the project is obtaining indicators (KPI) to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of processes and working for their continuous improvement in support of business objectives.
