CIRA

CIRA - the Italian Aerospace Research Centre - is a predominantly publicly owned company conducting research in aeronautics and space.

Based in Capua, CIRA has Italy’s largest collection of aerospace research infrastructure, including highly complex test facilities, laboratories, buildings and services.

The challenge

Before openMAINT was introduced, maintenance information was heavily dependent on external service providers. CIRA therefore had limited visibility into completed interventions, the maintenance history of its facilities and the status of ongoing activities.

Changes in service providers also made it difficult to preserve asset knowledge over time and ensure continuity in the management of a particularly complex infrastructure estate.

A stable information base independent of individual suppliers was needed, centralising data and activities to support operations, planning and control.

The solution

The openMAINT journey was developed progressively, adapting processes and workflows to CIRA’s specific procedures.

The platform now supports the entire corrective and scheduled maintenance lifecycle, from intervention planning to activity monitoring and reporting. It has become the shared system through which internal departments, specialised technicians and external operators manage maintenance information.

Over time, the solution was also extended to the management of regulatory obligations associated with assets and to field activities, which were digitised using tablets and mobile devices.

Benefits

The main outcome was to transform maintenance information into an internal knowledge asset for CIRA, available over time even when service providers change.

The platform enabled processes and operating methods to be standardised, improving intervention traceability and providing a more robust information base for planning, control and reporting. Data sharing also simplified coordination between offices, technicians and external operators.

Today, openMAINT supports the management of over 7.500 assets, more than 1.400 maintenance plans and over 400 work orders generated each year.

The future

The next stage aims to further strengthen the management of assets and machinery subject to regulatory obligations by bringing maintenance, deadlines and inspections into a single system.

The goal is to support control, compliance and operational continuity more effectively. To explore the journey, completed developments and results in greater detail, request the full case study.
